LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV Athletics and ESPN Radio 1100 AM/98.9 FM are teaming together to celebrate UNLV student-athletes and the university's sports programs with the inaugural Rebel Athletic Fund (RAF) Radio-Thon on Wednesday, Jan. 18, from noon to 7 p.m.

For the seven hours, ESPN Radio will be broadcasting live from the Thomas & Mack Center highlighting the student-athletes and coaches from UNLV's 17 athletics programs, including Runnin' Rebel basketball. The RAF Radio-Thon will lead up to the nationally ranked Runnin' Rebels' home conference opener against TCU at 7:30 p.m. that evening.

The Radio-Thon is designed to help grow membership for the RAF, which is the fundraising arm of the UNLV Athletics Department. The RAF provides financial support to the department to help student-athletes strive for excellence academically, socially and athletically. Fans will be able to join the RAF through a simple telephone call during the event - for as little as a $100 donation - or be able to gift memberships to other fans.

"College athletics is so special because - as fans - we can have a positive impact on the performance of our university's athletics programs by helping to provide resources," said Tony Bonnici, general manager of LOTUS Broadcasting-Las Vegas, who operates ESPN Radio 1100 AM/98.9 FM. "Not only are we the flagship station of Runnin' Rebel basketball and Rebel football, we are fans of UNLV and want to help the university better serve its student-athletes. It's a special time for UNLV Athletics right now and we want to take advantage of that and help grow the RAF, which helps to grow the athletics department."

Various Rebel student-athletes and coaches will join the Afternoon Gridlock on-air team of Seat Williams and Paul Howard from noon to 3 p.m. UNLV men's basketball head coach Dave Rice is set to be the first UNLV Athletics' guest on air, starting at 12:05 p.m. From 3 to 7 p.m., on-air personalities Steve Cofield and Dave Cokin will be joined by several UNLV Athletics representatives. UNLV Sr. Associate Athletics Director D.J. Allen will also serve as a co-host throughout much of the event.

"This is a special commitment from a special partner," said UNLV Director of Athletics Jim Livengood, who will be a special guest during the Radio-Thon. "ESPN Radio is helping us to celebrate UNLV Athletics, helping to celebrate our student-athletes. The more this community embraces the Rebels, the better we can be in all areas and the better we can represent this great city."

The Radio-Thon is helping to kick-off the RAF's 2012 in 2012 membership drive, with the goal of increasing its membership numbers during the next year by nearly 400 (to over 2012 members).
