Ames Named Outstanding Rebel Of The Week|
Feb. 21, 2018
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV baseball junior Nick Ames has been named the Outstanding Rebel of the Week presented by Air Force Reserve, the school announced Wednesday.
The award goes to the student-athlete who turned in the best individual performance during the previous week of competition from Monday through Sunday as voted on by the UNLV Athletic Communications department.
Ames, a Tucson, Arizona, native, led the Rebels to a 3-0 record at the Marucci Desert Classic at Earl E. Wilson Stadium on opening weekend of the 2018 season. The junior was a monster at the plate, hitting .500 with three home runs, eight RBI and six runs scored. He went 2-for-4 in all three games, with his six hits all going for extra bases as he added two doubles and a triple to the three homers. He finished the three-game stretch with a whopping 1.583 slugging and .571 on-base percentage.
Against Indiana State in the season opener, Ames hit a solo shot, recorded a double and scored two runs in the eventual walk-off 5-4 10th-inning win. The following day against Oregon, Ames knocked in three RBI with a triple, a double and a run scored as UNLV torched the Ducks 9-3. He saved his best day for last Sunday against Loyola Marymount. With the Rebels trailing by five runs early in the ball game, his first home run in the second inning sparked a comeback by UNLV, while his second bomb knotted the score at nine-all in the fourth. For the game, he notched four RBI and three runs scored to go along with the pair of homers -- tying his career highs in all three categories. The Scarlet and Gray went on to win 11-10 in 10 innings.
For his performance, Ames was named the Mountain West Player of the Week.
Rebel baseball will be home again this weekend for a four-game tilt with Columbia. First pitch in the series set for Friday night at 6:05 p.m.
