LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV Men's Golf junior Shintaro Ban has been named the Outstanding Rebel of the Week presented by Air Force Reserve, the school announced Wednesday.
The award goes to the student-athlete who turned in the best individual performance during the previous week of competition from Monday through Sunday as voted on by the UNLV Athletic Communications department. Ban, from San Jose, Calif., recorded the lowest single-round score in program history to lead the 15th-ranked Rebels to a second-place team finish at the Thunderbird Invitational in Tempe, Ariz., this past weekend. The record-setting performance came during the second round of the tournament when he carded a 9-under 62, including two eagles, six birdies and a bogey. The score was also one shot off the Karsten Golf Course record. For the tournament, he finished in a tie for second overall with a 12-under 201 - his best individual finish of the season - and was just one shot back of the tournament medalist.
