LAS VEGAS - Senior Tuomas Talvio and sophomore Tracie Chong were two of the top student-athletes honored at the 24th Annual UNLV Scholar-Athlete Honors Luncheon held at Thomas & Mack Center's Board Room on Wednesday.
Talvio, a forward on the men's soccer team, was commended for being the top male student-athlete at the university with the highest grade-point average. It marked the third straight year Talvio earned the honor. The native of Helsinki, Finland, holds an impressive 3.87 GPA in finance. Over his four-year career, Talvio played in 70 matches (started 43), scored 16 goals and recorded 11 assists.
Chong, who is from Honolulu, Hawaii, was the top female student-athlete honored with an outstanding 3.90 GPA in computer engineering. She leads the 22nd-ranked Lady Rebels in victories this season as she is 23-8 and holds a 47-17 career mark.
Both Talvio and Chong were among 120 UNLV student-athletes honored at the banquet, which included scholar-athletes from each of the school's 17 intercollegiate sports.
