UNLV Athletics Announces Drive For 5 Campaign Five-time PGA Tour winner and UNLV Hall of Famer Ryan Moore to serve as chairman of initiative to double the number of Rebel Athletic Fund members to more than 5,000.
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV Athletics has announced the launch of its "Drive for 5," the department's new comprehensive philanthropic campaign to double the number of Rebel Athletic Fund members to more than 5,000.
Five-time PGA Tour winner and UNLV Hall of Famer Ryan Moore will serve as the campaign's chairman. The most decorated student-athlete in school history will donate to the campaign and debut the Drive for 5 logo on his golf bag this week at the Masters in Augusta, Georgia.
"As a former UNLV student-athlete, I understand and appreciate the value of scholarship support," said Moore, who won the NCAA individual championship in 2004. "Without generous donors, my time at UNLV would not have been possible. The scholarships that are provided through membership in the Rebel Athletic Fund offered me an opportunity to pursue my dream of becoming a professional athlete. Serving as chairman of the Drive for 5 is a chance for me to give back and together, we will expand our base of support."
Reaching the goal of more than 5,000 RAF members would move UNLV into the top tier of the Mountain West.
Financial resources are needed to provide UNLV student-athletes with the opportunities to continue their success in the classroom, in competition and in the community. That support has a direct impact on the lives of student-athletes and on UNLV winning championships.
UNLV student-athletes recently earned a collective grade point average of 3.0 for what is believed to be the first time ever; last year, the department had a record 104 student-athletes graduate; and the Mountain West just announced a program-record number of Academic All-Mountain West honorees. UNLV has won eight conference championships in the last 18 months and has earned the MW's Community Service Champion Award in both of the past two years.
"We are committed to graduating leaders and winning championships the right way," said Director of Athletics Desiree Reed-Francois. "However, this mission requires resources and that is the motivation behind our new `Drive for 5' campaign. We will work relentlessly to double our donor base by the time we move into the new home of the Rebels at the world-class Las Vegas Stadium."
UNLV fans have graciously donated millions of dollars in support over the years that have contributed to the department's successes, but the cost of maintaining a successful NCAA Division I athletics program continues to rise. The RAF's primary role in providing opportunities for its 480 student-athletes comes through the raising of money for scholarships.
The Drive for 5 encourages current RAF members to continue or increase their financial support and to invite additional fans and alumni to join the RAF and help with the investment in student-athletes' future successes. Membership in the Rebel Athletic Fund starts as low as $25.
More information is available at the user-friendly website RebelAthleticFund.com. The site allows alumni and fans to easily contribute and will have an interactive chart that tracks membership during the initiative.
In addition to the campaign's kickoff video that features Moore and explains the importance of the Drive for 5, other videos will be released throughout the coming months. Infographics explaining the Drive for 5 will be released through the athletics department's social media platforms as part of a continuous education of fans on how to invest in the future of UNLV's student-athletes.
