April 29, 1999
LAS VEGAS - UNLV's Charles Cavagnaro will be one of three individuals awarded the General Robert R. Neyland Athletic Director Award by the All-America Football Foundation, the organization announced Thursday.
Cavagnaro will be honored at the 17th Banquet of Champions at Sam's Town Hotel in Tunica, Miss., on May 6. Other AD honorees are Charles Shira of Mississippi State and Harold Wilkes of Tennessee-Chattanooga.
Other honors scheduled for the ceremony include the Johnny Vaught Head Coach Lifetime Achievement Award, the Scoop Hudgins Lifetime Sports Information Director Award and the Lindsey Nelson Sportscaster Award.
"I can't imagine anyone anywhere not appreciating and understanding the impact Gen. Neyland made on college football," Cavagnaro said. "That is what makes receiving this award in his name such a great honor."
Cavagnaro, 58, is finishing his fourth year at UNLV after nearly 13 years heading his alma mater, the University of Memphis.
At UNLV, the former journalist oversees a 42-year-old department that fields 16 varsity sports. He is a member of the eight-person transition team that has helped form the new Mountain West Conference in which the Rebels begin membership on July 1.
