Female Student-Athletes Honored

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV Women's Sports Foundation hosted its annual awards banquet for female student-athletes Tuesday at the Moyer Student Union. Athletes from each sport were honored for their hard work and dedication in and out of athletics.

Rookie of the Year, Coach's and Most Valuable Player awards were presented by each sport's head coach. In addition, the nominees for the UNLV Sportswoman of the Year award were announced.

Cross Country and Track & Field's Katie Barto, Indoor Track's Michelle Davis, Swimming's Lorena Diaconescu, Basketball's Linda Fr?lich, Rodeo's Nora Hunt and Tennis' Paulina Janus are the nominees for this year's award, which will be announced following the completion of all spring sports.

Barto finished fifth at the Mountain West Conference Cross Country Championships and became only the second Rebel in school history to participate in the NCAA Cross Country Championships last fall. In Track & Field she ranks among the top 20 nationally in the 5,000 meters and has broken the school record in the 5,000 meters twice.

Davis was named the MWC's Indoor Track Athlete of the Year and ranked 13th in the nation in the 200 metters. She is an NCAA Indoor Track Championship qualifier.

Diaconescu was on the Romanian Olympic Team in the 2000 Sydney games and was a a member of the fourth-place team in the 800 free relay. She is a two-time NCAA All-American, was named MWC Swimmer of the Year and the MWC champion in the 100, 200 and 500 free, as well as the 400 and 800 free relays.

Fr?lich has earned honorable mention All-America honors two times and was this year's MWC Co-Player of the Year after leading the league in scoring and rebounding for the second straight season. She was named MWC Player of the Week three times during the season.

Hunt was selected as the MVP of her squad, which is currently first in the region going into competition this weekend.

Janus is a two-time MWC Player of the Week and won 10 of her final 11 matches of the season. She was named first-team All-MWC in singles and doubles and finished the year with a 16-7 mark.
