Men's Olympic Sports Student-Athletes Honored

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV Athletics Department hosted its annual awards banquet for its men's Olympic sports teams Wednesday at the Foundation Building. Student-athletes from each sport were honored for their accomplishments in their respective sports.

Rookie of the Year, Coach's and Most Valuable Player awards were presented by each sport's head coach. In addition, the nominees for the UNLV Olympic Sportsman of the Year award were announced.

Golf's Scott Lander, Swimming's Andrew Livingston, Rodeo's Charles Rich, Baseball's Garett Shitanishi and Tennis' Nenad Zivkovic are the nominees for this year's award, which will be announced following the completion of all spring sports.

Lander is a member of the 2001 United States Palmer Cup team and was the Mountain West Conference scoring champion with a 71.58 strokes per round average.

Livingston represented his home country of Puerto Rico in the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney and earned All-America honors at the 2001 NCAA Swimming Championships by finishing 10th in the 200 butterfly. He also was the MWC champion in the 200 butterfly.

Rich was this year's recipient of the rodeo coach's award. His team is ranked first in the region and will host the regional finals next week.

Shitanishi leads his team with a .363 batting average in 47 games played and is a Verizon Academic All-America Team nominee.

Zivkovic is an ITA Rolex Indoor Qualifier and was named MWC Player of the Week this season. He also was selected All-MWC for both singles and doubles.
