Peak Performance Part II: Mental Skills & Toughness Training|
March 14, 2013
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The Student-Athlete Affairs R.E.B.S. program (Reaching Excellence Beyond Sport) provides life skills programming to the student-athlete population. Life skills pillars targeted for this presentation, as identified by the NCAA, included athletic performance and personal growth.
The February event was a Mental Skills & Toughness Training Workshop, featured as part two of the "Peak Performance" series for the 2012-13 school year.
The presentation featured keynote speaker Spencer Wood, founder and President of Icebox Athlete and a specialist in the realm of sport performance. Spencer has provided mental skills and toughness training workshops for teams around the nation for more than 10 years, working with a host of coaches and athletes on a variety of platforms, including the collegiate, professional and Olympic levels.
Components of mental skills in the discussion included big game preparation, mental toughness and perseverance, bouncing back from defeat, poise, building confidence, focusing through mistakes and adversity and other valuable areas of emphasis. The event was hosted in the Thomas & Mack Center on Feb. 27 with more than 400 student-athletes in attendance. A follow-up to the student-athlete presentation was delivered to the coaching staffs the next day.
The integration of UNLV TOPP'S program, led by Dr. Brad Donohue, will afford an opportunity for in-house follow-up training to student-athletes in optimum performance in sport and in life. Co-sponsoring the event alongside UNLV Athletics through The Women of Excellence Athletic Fund, was the Academic Success Center. A special thank you to Capriotti's (Paradise location) for providing sandwiches for the event.
