May 27, 2015 LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Six UNLV Athletics sports programs earned a perfect single-year NCAA Academic Progress Rate score of 1,000, while a total of seven programs set or tied their team high for the 2013-14 academic year, as the national organization released its most recent data on Wednesday.
In addition, the UNLV women's golf team was recognized with the NCAA's Public Recognition Award by earning a multi-year APR of 1,000, putting it in the top 10 percent of all squads in its sport. The women's golfers also finished 16th at the national championship over the weekend. To achieve a perfect multi-year score of 1,000, a team must be perfect in four consecutive years.
Women's golf at UNLV was also one of the seven teams to set or tie its all-time program marks for single-year APR as it has now achieved a single-year score of 1,000 for the fifth time in the last six years. Also tying their previous-best scores were men's swimming (1,000, four times), women's swimming (1,000, twice) and women's tennis (1,000, four times). Achieving a 1,000 score for the first time in program history were the softball and volleyball squads.
Also of note, the Rebel baseball team set a new program high for single-year APR score with a 980.
All 17 of UNLV's NCAA Division I sports programs posses a multi-year APR score that exceeds the NCAA minimum cut score of 930, and 13 of UNLV's teams have a multi-year APR score in excess of 950.
Additionally, eight of UNLV's 14 head coaches had a team APR score that exceeds the national average for his/her respective sport.
"We are pleased with the progress we are making academically, and are also very proud of our six programs that earned perfect APR marks and another setting a program high," said UNLV Athletics Director Tina Kunzer-Murphy. "We are always striving to improve, but it is clear that there is a strong commitment by our student-athletes, coaches and academic support staff to the academic success of our programs."
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete. The APR includes eligibility, retention and graduation in the calculation and its goal is provide a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport.
A score of 1,000 means that the institution has met the goals of retention and satisfactory degree progress for 100 percent of each of its student-athletes in a given time period. A score of 900 equates to 90 percent, 800 equals 80 percent, and so forth. The NCAA implemented the APR in 2003.
