AUBURN, Ala. (UNLVRebels.com) - Sophomore Rachel Dixon became the first UNLV swimmer to post a top-16 finish at the NCAA Championships in four years on Thursday night on the first day of the meet, which this year is being held in Auburn, Ala., in the James E. Martin Aquatic Center.

Dixon, who already held the school record in the 50 free, lowered it in the morning preliminaries with a time of 22.37. That was good for 15th place and a spot in the night consolations, where she once again finished in 15th place off a time of 22.58. That earned her Honorable Mention All-American status, and scored the first points for UNLV since the 2009 Championships. She is also the second-ever Rebel to place in the top 16 in the 50 free, joining Sally Fleisher (1985 and 1986).

Dixon will continue action in the championships over the next two days, as will classmate Katelyne Herrington.

The first day ended with California atop the leaderboard with 132 points, while UNLV stands in a tie for 29th with Boise State at two points.
