Following an outstanding start to this year's NCAA Championships with three scoring swims on the first day, the UNLV men's swimming and diving team followed that up on Friday night with their fourth top-16 swim of the meet. This year's meet, which concludes on Saturday, is being held at the Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center on the University of Texas campus. UNLV currently stands in 18th place with 38 points.
Texas holds a narrow lead in the overall team standings with 318.5 points, while California remains in second with 312.5 and Florida is third with 279. UNLV's 38 points are the second most points its ever scored at the national meet, while the Rebels are the only school from a non-power conference in the top 25 of the team standings. The night finals on Saturday will be streamed live on ESPN3.com.
The Rebels' points on Friday came in their third relay event of the week, the 200 medley relay. UNLV qualified 15th in the morning prelims (1:26.09) to reach the night consolation heat, and again finished in 15th place at night to pick up four points, after touching the wall in a time of 1:26.24. Making up the relay squad was sophomore Henrique Machado, senior David Szele, sophomore Dillon Virva and sophomore Samuel Lameynardie. All four earned Honorable Mention All-American status thanks to their top-16 finish.
UNLV was represented in two individual events as well on Friday, beginning with the 100 breast, in which Szele posted a time of 53.65 to finish in a tie for 27th place. The other swim came from Machado, 43rd in the 100 back in 48.04.
The Rebels are schedule to compete in three events on Saturday to close out the meet: the 200 back (Machado), the 100 free (Tom Paco-Pedroni, Virva), and the 400 free relay.
