Rebels Wrap Up Day One at UNLV Winter Invite

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV Swimming and Diving kicked off its three-day home meet on Thursday, hosting four schools at the UNLV Winter Invite at the Buchanan Natatorium. After a round of preliminaries in the morning and finals in the evening, the Rebel men finished with 236 points and the Rebel women finished with 224 points, both totals good for third place heading into day two.

The first event of the evening was the 200 freestyle relay. On the women's side, Sophia Carnevale, Ida Schutt, Sydney Schuette and Kyndal Phillips took third with a time of 1:33.76 while the men's relay team of Or Sabatier, Kasey Foley, Joe Starkweather and Forrest Beesley also took third after turning in a time of 1:20.19.

In the 500 individual freestyle event, Ethan Kelin was the top finisher for the Rebels with an eighth-place time 4:50.14. In the women's event, Josefine Hippi and Kristina Hendrick were fourth and sixth in the consolation heat with times of 5:04.13 and 5:05.44, respectively.

UNLV placed two in the top six of both the women's and men's 200 individual medley. In the women's event, Phillips earned a third-place time of 2:03.15 and Schutt took sixth with a time 2:04.64. For the men, Francois Van Wynsberghe clocked a time of 1:53.32 for fifth place, followed by Christopher Havton in sixth with a 1:53.81.

The Rebels' top-finisher in the women's 50 freestyle was Carnevale, who took fifth with a time of 23.54, while Foley turned in the men's best finish in the 50 freestyle with a 20.13, which was good for third place.

The swimming portion of the night concluded with the 400 medley relays. The women were up first and UNLV scored its second third-place relay finish of the day as the "A" relay group of Phillips, Carnevale, Goezde Tekin and Schutt teamed up for a time of 3:54.84. For the men, the "A" relay squad of Beesley, Van Wynsberghe, Collin Moore and Austin Hussain took fourth place after registering a time of 3:19.31.

Two diving events were held on day one - the women's three meter and the men's one meter. UNLV's Alyssa Arnett took the top spot in the three meter after posting a score of 295.20, followed by Katie Bezte in third with a 242.70, Kourtney Clark in fifth with a score of 239.90 and Chrysoula Gatsios in sixth with a 227.20. Robert Morgan delivered the best Rebel performance in the men's one meter, taking third with a 295.15. UNLV's Alexander Rojas placed fifth in the event with a score of 180.05.

After day one, Nevada, Reno is on top of the women's standings with a score of 278 while University of the Pacific is in first place on the men's side with a total score of 331.

Day two of the UNLV Winter Invite continues on Friday morning.
