Rebel Women Hit The Road To MW Championships|
Feb. 13, 2018
The UNLV Rebels will be at the 2018 Mountain West Women's Swimming and Diving Championships this week, held in San Antonio, Texas at the Palo Alto College Aquatics Center. This year's championship will run from Wednesday, Feb. 14-Saturday, Feb. 17, with preliminaries starting at 12:30 pm (CT) on Wednesday, 11:00 am (CT) Thursday-Saturday while the night finals will have a 6:30 pm (CT) start each night.
It's a testament to what this team has been quietly accomplishing the past 18 months," said head coach Ben Loorz. "Of course, we have to show up and get the job done, but I and the coaches have a high level of belief in what this squad is capable of at the Championship meet. We are not a large squad, but our goals include: breaking school records, podium finishes for relays, qualifying for NCAAs, and of course moving up in the team rankings (compared with last year)."
The Rebel women have their sights set on surpassing last year's finish of eighth place. Looking to pace UNLV's efforts this week is Sofia Carnevale who holds the fastest time in the league for the 100 (1:00.67) and the 200 breast (2:12.72). Kyndal Phillips is also expected to be a strong contender this week, she currently holds the fastest time in the league for the 200 back (1:55.74), second-fastest in the 200 IM (2:00.89), and third-fastest in the 100 back (53.58). Ida Schutt brings the league's fifth-fastest time in the 500 free (4:49.12) and the fourth-fastest time in the 400 IM (4:19.46) into the week. Another event that the Rebel women are expected to do well in is the 200 medley relay where they have the second-fastest seed time in the MW (1:40.49).
