LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV men's swimming team looks to start a new legacy this week as it will begin competition on Wednesday in this year's Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships, which will be held at East Los Angeles Community College in Monterey Park, Calif., with the four-day meet running through Saturday, Feb. 18.

This is the first year for UNLV in the MPSF after 12 years in the Mountain West. The Rebels won seven straight MW championships (2005-11), and hope to keep that conference championship streak alive in the MPSF. The preseason favorites in the league, UNLV finished the regular season with a 5-1 mark, with the lone loss coming at top-10 Arizona in October.
UNLV comes into this week's meet with the fastest time in 10 of the 18 swimming events. Three of those times comes in the relay events, the 200 free, 200 medley, and 400 medley.
Sophomore Giacomo Gremizzi is seeded first in both of his events in this week's meet, the 200 IM and the 400 IM. Senior Cody Roberts, 2011 MW Swimmer of the Year, is currently ranked second in the nation in the 100 fly and holds the league's top time as well. Other Rebels that will be seeded first in their events include senior Charlie Tapp (50 free), sophomore David Szele (100 breast), freshman Coleman Allen (100 back), and freshman Balint Batka(200 fly).
The key to the Rebels' chances for a MPSF title this week will probably come down to how the overall depth of the team performs, as several Rebels did not rest for this week's championships to instead concentrate on the NCAA championships in March.
