Herrington, Dixon Off To NCAA Championships|
March 18, 2014
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV women's team will send a total of two swimmers to the 2014 NCAA Championships that are being held this week in Minneapolis, Minn., on Thursday-Saturday. Seniors Katelyne Herrington and Rachel Dixon are both making their third straight appearance at the national championships. The three-day meet will take place at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center, with will preliminaries beginning at 9 am (PT) each day and the finals starting at 5 pm (PT). The night finals on the second and third days of the meet will be streamed live on ESPN3.com, while there will be live video provided of the prelims all three days as well as Thursday's finals.
Both Rebels earned Honorable Mention All-American honors for their swims in the 2012 meet, and look to repeat that feat again in their final meet as a Rebel. Herrington, who placed 14th in the 100 fly as a sophomore, finished 19th in the 2013 meet but comes in this week as one of the top seeds in the field. Her time of 51.48 that set a new Mountain West record at February's conference championship meet gives her the sixth-fastest time in the nation, and she will be bidding to become the first Rebel to claim a top-8 individual finish in five years. The 100 fly will be held on Friday.
That leaves Dixon to make the first swim of the meet for the Rebels. This is her second meet participating in an individual event after swimming on the Rebel relays as a junior at the national championships. As a sophomore, she was a surprise scorer in the 50 free, as the late addition to the field set a school record time of 22.37 to place 15th overall. She has since lowered that record time to 22.31 this season, which seeds her 30th overall in the event that begins on Thursday.
