LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Kunio Kono has resigned as associate head coach for the UNLV men's and women's swimming and diving team to become the head coach for the University of New Mexico women's swimming team, it was announced on Tuesday.
Kunio has been a member of the Rebel coaching staff for the past nine seasons, seven of which he was an assistant coach before receiving a promotion to associate head coach in the summer of 2010. During his time in Las Vegas, UNLV has won a total of eight conference championships between the men's and women's squads, while the Rebel men have become a consistent top-25 squad for the past four seasons. Seventeen different Rebels earned All-American or Honorable Mention All-American honors during his time on the UNLV staff.
"It's always a proud moment for us when one of our assistants gets a head coach position, especially at a respected school like the University of New Mexico," said UNLV head coach Jim Reitz. "Kunio is the eighth assistant in my time here to get a head collegiate coaching position, and that's something we are very proud of. I am very excited for this opportunity for Kunio."
