May 19, 2011
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Two UNLV swimmers received academic honors on Thursday, as Cody Roberts was voted to the Capital One Academic All-District VIII University Division At-Large Men's Second Team, while Anja Crawford was named to the At-Large Women's Second Team. Both teams are selected by sports information directors. It is the first academic district honor for the swimmers in their careers.
Roberts, a sophomore and native of West Richland, West., was named the 2011 Mountain West Conference Swimmer of the Year after winning three individual titles and leading four UNLV relays to first place swims at the MWC Championships. He helped the Rebels win a seventh-straight conference championship, and then led UNLV to a school-record 19th place finish at the NCAA Championships in March after swimming on four top-16 relays, including the eighth place 200 medley relay to earn Relay All-American Honors. Roberts also earned honorable mention All-American honors by placing 14th in the 100 fly.
A member of the All-MWC Academic Team in 2009-10, Roberts carries a cumulative 3.46 GPA with a major in business.
Crawford, a junior and native of Las Vegas, scored in two events at this year's MWC Championships, including a fourth-place finish in the 200 back, the highest finish in her career. She has a total of seven top-16 finishes in her three years at UNLV. Crawford, a two-time member of the MWC All-Academic team, holds a perfect 4.0 GPA at UNLV, and is majoring in psychology.
The at-large all-district team represents the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling. Student-athletes must be in at least their second season, hold a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.30 and be a starter or important reserve to be eligible.
District VIII is made up of schools in California, Hawaii, Alaska, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Nevada and Utah.
