Entering his third season with the UNLV baseball program is David Martinez, who oversees the Rebel pitchers and serves as the program's recruiting coordinator. Under the watch of Martinez, freshman pitcher Tanner Peters threw just UNLV's sixth one-hit complete game in school history in 2009. Martinez is a former Rebel who came to UNLV after spending the previous two years coaching at Riverside Community College in Riverside, Calif., where he helped lead the Tigers to the 2007 California State Championship. In 2006 he coached Tommy Hanson and Danny Gutierrez, who was recently rated as the Texas Rangers No. 9 overall prospect. Martinez also served as an assistant at Purdue during 2005 and at Cal State San Bernardino in 2004. He also worked as an associate scout for the Baltimore Orioles for two seasons. "Dave is an energetic and ambitious young coach with strong Southern California recruiting ties," said UNLV head coach Buddy Gouldsmith. "His evaluating experience with the Baltimore Orioles and his recent tenure under Dennis Rogers at Riverside Community College have given him a proven history in both identifying and developing student-athletes." Martinez spent the fall of 1997 with the UNLV baseball program as a player. He earned his bachelor's degree in kinesiology from Cal State San Bernardino in 2004. Martinez married Saraya Shalhoub on Aug. 9, 2008. |
