LAS VEGAS - Freshman catcher Justin Tellam hit a two out single in the bottom of the ninth inning to score Brent Johnson and pilot the Rebels (2-3) to a 7-6 victory over the Hilltoppers of Western Kentucky (0-2) on Saturday afternoon.
Western Kentucky got off to a fast start offensively as they lead the UNLV 6-0 before the Rebels were able to answer back in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Eric Neilsen hit a two run homer to put the Rebels on the board and bring the score to 6-2.
The Rebels picked up two more runs in the bottom of the fifth off of an RBI double by Eddie Gill and an RBI single from Brent Johnson. In the bottom of the sixth, senior second baseman Ryan Ruiz, tied the game on an inside-the-park home run that also scored freshman center fielder Ryan Kowalski and brought the score even at 6-6.
In the ninth, back to back singles by Brent Johnson and Peter White put the Rebels in scoring position for freshman catcher Justin Tellam who's single into left-center sealed the victory for the Rebels.
Ruiz, Johnson, and Gill were all 3-5 at the plate while Neilsen, White, and Tellam each added a hit.
Starter Jake Vose got off to a shaky start, but settled down after the third inning. Vose left the game after six innings, giving up six runs off of nine hits while picking up four strikeouts. Senior lefthander Ben Scheinbaum (1-0) was solid in Relief and picked up the win after two and one-third innings without giving up a hit.
For the Hilltoppers, the infield did much of the bat work as third baseman Tim Grogan, shortstop Phillip Thayer, and second baseman Matt Johnston all went 2-4 at the plate. Reliever Grady Hinchman (0-1) picked up the loss for Western Kentucky.
The two teams will play the series finale Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on KSHP AM 1400.
