LAS VEGAS - The offensive machinery was fired up on Sunday afternoon, as UNLV (3-3) blasted its way to a 17-4 victory over the Hilltoppers of Western Kentucky (0-3). With the win, the Rebels pulled their record even on the year and wrapped up a three-game sweep of the Hilltoppers.

UNLV started with a big first inning that produced five runs off of four hits, including RBI singles by Johnny Uriegas and Zeke Parraz. In the fourth, Eric Nielsen and Eddie Gill drove in runs before third baseman Brent Johnson hit an RBI triple to give the Rebels an 8-1 lead.

The Hilltoppers answered in the top of the fifth, with a two run homerun by Matt Gunning, and Tim Grogan scored off of a wild pitch to bring the score to 8-4.

That was as close as Western Kentucky would get, as the Rebels continued to bring in the runs. UNLV scored three runs in the 5th, a pair of runs in each of the 6th and 7th innings, and four in the bottom of the eighth to bring the final score up to 17-4.

Ryan Ruiz continued his stellar weekend, finishing 3-4 at the plate with 3 RBIs, 4 runs scored, a solo home run in the seventh inning, a stolen base, and two walks. Eric Nielsen was 3-6 with 5 RBIs, Eddie Gill 2-5 with 3 RBIs, and Zeke Parraz finished the game 2-3 at the plate with one RBI and a stolen base.

Senior righthander David Seccombe was solid in his first start of the season. Seccombe gave up 4 runs off of 4 hits in four and two-thirds innings, before being relieved in the fifth inning by eventual game-winner, freshman Kevin Skogley (1-0).

For Western Kentucky, Matt Gunning was 2-4 with 2 RBIs and a home run, while Tim Grogan went 2-5. Starter Daniel Faulkner (0-1) was credited with the loss for the Hilltoppers.

The Rebels will continue their homestand next weekend with a three game series against intrastate rivals, the Wolf Pack of Nevada, Reno beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Friday February 20th.
