LAS VEGAS ( – The UNLV baseball team picked up its second win this opening weekend, handing UC Irvine their first loss of the season, 3-2 here today at Anteater Ballpark.

Freshman Erick Fedde (1-0) earned his first win, allowing just five hits over six innings of work and striking out three. Mark Shannon picked up his first save, giving up one hit over two innings of work with two strikeouts.

The Rebels took a 1-0 lead in the top of third with Scott Dysinger’s double down the right-field line, scoring Joey Swanner from first.

The Rebel defense picked up Fedde in each of the first three innings, turning inning-ending double plays in both the second and third to avoid UCI’s scoring threats.

UNLV added a run in each the fifth and seventh to build a 3-0 lead. Danny Higa walked to start the fifth, made his way to second on a Scott Dysinger groundout and third on a wild pitch before scoring on an error by Anteater first baseman Jordan Fox.

Dysinger singled to right in the seventh and made and scored two batters later on Trent Cook’s single to right field to make it 3-0.

Sophomore Zack Hartman came on in the seventh in relief and quickly loaded the bases with a walk, single and hit batter. Hartman was able to calm down and retire the next three batters to avoid any damage and squash Irvine’s late rally attempt.

The Anteaters cut the lead to 3-2 in the eighth after Hartman walked D.J. Crumlich to lead the inning off and Jordan Fox roped an RBI double down the left-field line to make it 3-1. Shannon entered in relief and gave up an RBI single to Ronnie Shaeffer that tied the game before a sac bunt, groundout to short and a spectacular diving catch in left by Brandon Bayardi ended the Anteater threat.

Shannon threw a clean ninth, striking out two along the way to secure UNLV’s second win of the season.

UNLV will be off during the week before traveling to Corpus Christi, Texas for the Kleberg Bank College Classic, hosted by Texas A&M – Corpus Christi. The Rebels will open the tournament Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. against the Islanders.
