Rebels Cruise Past Pacific

STOCKTON, CALIF. ( - The UNLV Rebels (4-1) got off to a hot start against Pacific (1-3) en route to an 9-1 victory on Thursday night at Klein Family Field in Stockton, Calif.

In the second inning, UNLV was able to get some runners across when sophomore Joey Swanner hit a double into right field, driving in two runs. Freshman Justin Jones followed that up with a double to left and Swanner came around easily to score.

The Rebels put one more on the board in the third when senior designated hitter Ryan Scott hit a sacrifice bunt up the right side, giving senior Brandon Bayardi a chance to score.

Pacific scored one run in the fourth, but UNLV exploded again in the sixth when Jones got on base when the Tiger’s first baseman was pulled off of the bag due to a wide throw by the pitcher. Junior Matt McCallister was able to score on the play. After back-to-back singles from seniors Mark Shannon and Bayardi, the Rebels were able to tack on two more runs, giving them a 7-1 advantage. All of the runs the Rebels scored to start the game came with two outs.

UNLV scored one more run in eighth and ninth innings, giving them a 9-1 victory.

Sophomore Erick Fedde got the nod, going 6.0 innings, striking out seven and allowing four hits and one earned run. He earned his first win of the season in his second appearance.

Senior reliever Brady Zuniga pitched 3.0 innings, allowing only one hit and no runs while striking out two to earn his first save of the year.



Leading the Rebels were their leadoff hitters, as Swanner and Jones each went 3-for-5 with two RBI. Swanner extended his hitting streak to 18, which dates back to last season.

UNLV finished the evening with 13 hits and two errors compared to Pacific’s five hits and five errors.

The Rebels will be back in action tomorrow as they will play a doubleheader. The first game will be at 1:00 p.m. against Gonzaga (2-2) and the nightcap will be against Pacific at 6:00 p.m. Sophomore John Richy (0-1, 14.54 ERA) will get the start against Gonzaga, who will send Marco Gonzalez (0-1, 7.50 ERA).
