LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV baseball team opened the 2012 home schedule with a 4-3 over visiting CSU Bakersfield here tonight at Wilson Stadium.
Jesse Garcia (1-1) earned his first win of the season after throwing two innings, striking out three and allowing just two hits along the way. Sophomore Zack Hartman (1) picked up his first save of the year, holding off a late Roadrunner base loaded rally in the top of the ninth.
The Rebels (4-4) got on the board early plating a run in each of the first two innings. Brandon Bayardi’s sacrifice fly to right field scored Trevor Kirk from third in first, while freshman Scott Tomassetti’s RBI ground out to second scored Marvin Campbell to make it a 2-0 game after two innings.
The Roadrunners evened it up in the third when Stuart Smith singled to center field, driving in Jordie Hein and Kevin Younger.
After a scoreless fourth, CSUB (4-4) took a 3-2 lead off Smith’s triple that found the gap in right-center field, scoring Oscar Sanay from second.
Tomassetti came up big again in the sixth, driving in Mark Shannon from second on a single down the left field line to knot the game at 3-3. The freshman catcher finished 1-for-3 with a pair RBI on the night.
T.J. White opened the eighth with a double and advanced to third on a Campbell groundout to second. Two batters later, Danny Higa’s two-out infield single to short scored what would be the game-winning run in White.
The Rebels and Roadrunners will be back in action tomorrow afternoon with first pitch slated for 2:05 p.m. at Wilson Stadium.
