LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) -- The UNLV Rebels (7-3) won a 6-5 walkoff thriller over the LMU Lions (4-6) Friday night at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
Freshman Justin Jones hit the game winner into deep right center field, scoring Cody Howard from second, who pinch ran earlier in the inning for Patrick Armstrong. Armstrong led the Rebels, going 2-for-3 with three RBI in the game.
The Rebels started the game with a 2-0 lead when Armstrong hit a single to right field, scoring sophomore TJ White and senior Mark Shannon. UNLV would add one more run in the second when freshman Collin Yellich scored on a LMU error.
The Lions would chip into the Rebels’ lead in the fifth and sixth innings, but UNLV widened the gap in the seventh when Shannon drove in White. Shannon would score on the next at-bat after senior Brandon Bayardi singled up the middle.
The three run cushion would not be enough as LMU rallied for two runs in the eighth and one in the ninth to tie the game. Jones’s game-winning double came with one out and two runners aboard against LMU’s closer Bret Dahlson.
Junior Buddy Borden got the start for the Rebels, pitching 6.0 innings allowing five hits and no earned runs while striking out six. Borden has not allowed a run this season in 21.2 innings pitched.
Getting the win for the Rebels was senior Andy Beresford, who came in for relief in the eighth inning. Beresford allowed two hits and one earned run in his two innings of work while striking out two to notch his third win of the season.
Joining Armstrong with multiple hits on the night were White and Shannon, who finished 2-for-4 and 2-for-5, respectively.
UNLV will be back in action tomorrow against Bradley (3-6) at 6:05 p.m. The Braves also won in walk-off fashion, defeating Hawai’i 6-5. Day three of the Rebel Classic will open with LMU and Hawai’i at 2:05 p.m. on Saturday.
