UNLV Rallies To Beat Bradley|
March 2, 2013
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV Rebels (8-3) remain undefeated in the Rebel Classic with an 8-3 victory over the Bradley Braves (3-7) on Saturday night at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
Bradley took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, but UNLV starter John Richy settled in, retiring 12 of the next 13 batters he faced. Bradley would add two more runs in the top of the sixth and take a 3-0 lead before the Rebels would get on the board.
In the bottom of the sixth, the UNLV bats came alive. Senior Mark Shannon scored on an Erik VanMeetren single to left field. Freshman Joey Armstrong walked on the next at bat, loading the bases for sophomore Scott Tomassetti who singled to left, scoring Patrick Armstrong from third. The bases were still loaded for freshman Justin Jones, who ripped a bases clearing triple down the right field line, giving the Rebels a 5-3 lead. Jones would later score on a TJ White hit to right field.
Richy earned his first win of the season after pitching 7.1 innings, giving up three runs (only one earned) on five hits while striking out seven and walking two. Coming in for relief in the eighth was senior Tyler Iodence. He pitched 1.2 innings and only allowed one hit to earn his first save of the season.
From the plate, UNLV was led by Jones who finished 3-for-3 with four RBI on the night. VanMeetren and White were the only other two Rebels to finish with multiple hits as they went 2-for-4 and 2-for-3, respectively, with one RBI and one run scored a piece.
The Rebels will play Hawai'i tomorrow in the final day of the Rebel Classic at 6:05 p.m (PT). That game will follow Loyola Marymount and Bradley, which will start at noon.
