LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV baseball team concluded its Mountain West opening series this weekend, falling 15-6 to visiting TCU here at Wilson Stadium.
TCU struck in the first inning for the third straight day, taking a 1-0 lead on a fielder’s choice from Josh Elander that scored Kyle Von Tungeln.
UNLV (10-10) evened the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second when Brandon Bayardi scored from second on Danny Higa’s RBI single to right field. Bayardi singled to start the inning and moved to second on a balk by TCU starter Brandon Finnegan.
The Frogs put up a three spot in the top of the third, regaining the lead at 4-1. Brance Rivera reached on a Scott Dysinger error to leadoff the third, making his way to third on the play. After Rivera scored on a wild pitch, UNLV starter Erick Fedde ran into a rough patch, walking three of the next four batters, with the third coming with the bases loaded. TCU capped the inning when Zac Jordan scored on a passed ball.
Finnegan retired seven straight until the fifth inning when the Rebels cut the lead in half at 4-2 off Dysinger’s RBI double to left center, scoring T.J. White who reached on a single up the middle.
TCU extended the lead to 8-2, scoring a run in both the seventh and eighth off bases-loaded walks before Jordan ripped a bases-loaded double to left, scoring a pair.
A seven-run ninth by the Frogs put the game out of reach at 15-2. The Rebels would score four in the bottom of the ninth off TCU reliever Kaleb Merck, but the rally would come to an end with Casey Sato striking out to end the game.
The Rebels will hit the road starting this week, traveling to Tempe, Ariz. for a Wednesday night game against Arizona State before traveling to Colorado Springs for a weekend series at Air Force. First pitch Wednesday night is set for 5:30 p.m. PT.
