March 17, 2013
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The New Mexico Lobos (8-10, 2-1) clubbed their way to a 12-7 victory over the No. 21 UNLV Rebels (15-5, 1-2) on Sunday at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
D.J. Peterson hit two home runs in the game, a three-run shot in third and a grand slam in the sixth, to help the Lobos earn the series win. Peterson finished 3-for-5 with eight RBI.
It looked good for UNLV in the first inning, as they jumped to a 3-0 lead. But New Mexico scored four runs in third, fifth and sixth innings to reach the 12 run mark before the Rebels could get back on the board.
UNLV tried to rally, scoring two runs in the sixth and ninth innings, but it was not enough to overtake the preseason Mountain West favorites for the second consecutive day.
Rebel starter John Richy (2-3) took the loss in his 4.1 innings of work. He allowed eight hits and eight runs (six of which earned) to go along with one strikeout.
From the plate four UNLV players had multiple hits in the game. T.J. White finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored, Mark Shannon finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, Erik VanMeetren finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and Joey Armstrong finished 2-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI.
The Rebels are back in action tomorrow against former conference foe BYU at 3 p.m. at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
