PROVO, Utah - - The UNLV baseball team (14-7, 2-0 MWC) racked up 21 hits as they slugged their way to a 17-1 victory over the Cougars of BYU (10-18, 0-2 MWC) on Friday night.
The Rebels scored in each of the first seven innings, and held the Cougars to just 1 run off of 3 hits en route to their second Mountain West Conference victory of the season.
Senior shortstop Peter White posted a career night, going perfect at the plate, finishing 6-for-6 with 1 RBI and 4 runs scored. Senior left fielder Andrew D'Angelo hit three doubles as he went 3-for-6 with 2 RBI and 3 runs scored.
Brent Johnson continued his solid play against the Cougars by tallying 4 RBI with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate.
Freshman catcher Justin Tellam hit his second home run of the season in the third inning as he launched a solo shot over the wall in right field.
Matt Luca (4-1) picked up his fourth win of the season, going five innings while giving up just one run off of two hits while walking one and striking out five.
For the Cougars, left fielder Rob Itri finished 1-for-3 with 1 RBI while Paul Jacinto (0-6) was charged with the loss.
UNLV will go for the series sweep tomorrow morning at 11:00 p.m. (PST) as senior righthander David Seccombe will take the mound for the Rebels.
