March 23, 2013
SAN DIEGO, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) -- UNLV baseball (17-6, 2-3) evened the weekend series against San Diego State (11-12, 3-2) on Saturday with a 4-2 victory over the Aztecs.
The Rebels used a strong seventh inning to take a 2-1 lead and scored a run in the eighth and ninth innings to secure the win. It is only the second time since 2007 that UNLV has been able to win at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
For the first five innings it was a pitcher’s duel between UNLV’s Buddy Borden (3-1) and SDSU’s Philip Walby (1-2) as neither pitcher allowed a run.
The Aztecs took a 1-0 lead in the sixth, but the Rebels responded in the top of the seventh scoring two runs. The first came off of a Brandon Bayardi double that scored Justin Jones from first. Jones was able to avoid the SDSU catcher's tag and tie the game. Bayardi scored later in the inning by way of an Erik VanMeetren sacrifice fly.
T.J. White scored in the eighth on an Aztec error, giving the Rebels a 3-1 lead. SDSU cut lead to 3-2 after scoring one in the bottom of the eighth.
In the top of the ninth, Bayardi hit the first pitch he saw down the left field line for his third home run of the year, and his second of the weekend. Bayardi and White were the only two Rebels to finish the game with multiple hits.
Senior Andrew Beresford (4) came in for relief in the eighth and shut the Aztecs down in the ninth to earn the save. Borden was credited with the win after pitching 6.1 innings, allowing one run on four hits while striking out five.
The rubber match between the two teams is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sunday. The Rebels will send John Richy (2-3) to the mound to face the Aztec’s Ryan Doran (3-2). Fans can listen live or follow the action via live stats off of links at UNLVRebels.com.
