LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV baseball team broke out of its recent slump in a big way, pounding out 17 hits and scoring 19 runs to improve to 6-1 in midweek games this season following a 19-2 win over Southern Utah tonight at Wilson Stadium.
Six different Rebels had at least two hits while Trevor Kirk posted a 3-for-3 day at the plate, scoring four runs and driving in one. Brandon Bayardi was 2-for-4 with a game-high four RBI for UNLV.
John Richy (2-0) earned his second win of the year in his second collegiate start, scattering four hits over six innings of work, not allowing a run while striking out six T-Bird batters.
The Rebels (12-13, 1-5 Mountain West) jumped out to a commanding 18-0 lead after four innings, batting around the order in a six-run second and seven-run fourth.
Southern Utah (6-17) got on the board in the seventh, scoring two runs off relief pitcher Nicolas Libonati. Libonati would work his way out of the seventh yielding just the two runs on two hits and throw 2.0 innings, striking out two along the way.
Cory Ginther closed out the game for UNLV, giving up just one hit in the top of the ninth.
UNLV will hit the road again this week, traveling to Ft. Worth, Texas for a weekend series with TCU. First pitch is slated for 4:30 p.m. PT at Lupton Stadium Friday evening.
