March 29, 2014
LINCOLN, Neb. (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV baseball (19-7/9-3 Mountain West), which is ranked No. 25 by Perfect Game, clinched the series over Nebraska (14-12) with a 5-4 win on Saturday at Haymarket Park.
Junior John Richy (5-1) allowed four runs on nine hits and struck out a career-high 10 in 8.1 innings of work to lead the Rebels. Sophomore Brayden Torres entered the game in the ninth inning and induced a fielder's choice and struck out the final batter to earn his fifth save of the year.
The Huskers opened the game with run in the first inning, but UNLV took the lead by scoring two runs in the third. Johnathan Torres reached on a Nebraska error to lead off the frame and advanced to third after Matt McCallister doubled to left field. Torres scored on the next pitch and McCallister moved to third after Joey Swanner singled to the shortstop. Justin Jones followed that by hitting a first-pitch sacrifice fly to left field, driving in McCallister.
The Huskers retook the lead after scoring a pair of runs in the home half of the third, giving them a 3-2 lead.
UNLV tied the game in the top of the fifth after McCallister scored on a T.J. White sacrifice fly. McCallister got aboard after getting hit with a pitch. He then stole second and advanced to third on Jones' single before White's sac fly.
Both sides got one hit and advanced that runner to third base in the sixth inning, but neither team could plate a run.
In the seventh inning, the Rebels loaded the bases with two outs and the Nebraska fans were brought to life when Erik VanMeetren faced a 1-2 count. He coolly singled up the middle, scoring Swanner from third and White from second to give UNLV a 5-3 lead.
The Huskers added a late run in the bottom of the ninth and had the tying run on first, but Brayden Torres ended the game with a strikeout.
White led the Rebels from the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with an RBI. Swanner (2-for-5) and VanMeetren (2-for-4) each had multiple hits in the game, while VanMeetren recorded a team-high two RBI.
