Rebels Beat Falcons 11-10 in 10 Innings

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV baseball (19-8, 4-4 Mountain West) grinded out an 11-10 victory over Air Force (8-17, 2-4) in 10 innings on Saturday at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
Rebel freshman Collin Yelich hit a walk-off single to left field, scoring sophomore Joey Swanner from third. Swanner reached on a one-out triple to give Yelich an opportunity to drive in the game winning run.
Air Force took a 2-0 lead after the second inning, but UNLV battled back, scoring four runs in the bottom third. After that the game was a see-saw match, as there were five more lead changes. The Falcons scored one in the fourth and two in the fifth, taking a 5-4 lead, but the Rebels tied the game in the bottom of the fifth. UNLV took a 6-5 lead at the end of six innings, but Air Force tied it in the top of the seventh. The Rebels then scored three in the bottom of the seventh to take a 9-6 lead. The Falcons rattled off four runs in the top of the eighth to take a 10-9 lead, but UNLV tied it in the bottom half of the frame. The Rebels sealed the game in the 10th with Yelich’s RBI.
Swanner led UNLV, going 3-for-6 in the game and scored two runs. Five other Rebels finished the game with multiple hits: T.J. White went 2-for-3, Mark Shannon went 2-for-6, Patrick Armstrong went 2-for-3, Justin Jones went 2-for-4 and Yelich went 2-for-3 after coming into the game in the seventh inning. Senior Brandon Bayardi finished 1-for-4 on the day, but hit his fourth home run of the season in the fifth inning.
UNLV freshman Kenny Oakley (3-1) picked up the win after pitching 2.0 innings of relief. Rebel starter Buddy Borden pitched 6.0 innings and struck out 10 batters while allowing five runs, three of which were earned, on seven hits.
UNLV and Air Force will be back in action on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. It will be the first time since 2006 that the Rebels have played on Easter. The probable pitcher for UNLV will be right hander John Richy (2-3, 3.99 ERA) and he will potentially face Air Force’s right-handed pitcher Steven Trojan (2-2, 3.82 ERA).
