Rebels Cruise To 8-2 Win|

CEDAR CITY, Utah - UNLV used a pair of big innings in sending Southern Utah's baseball team to its seventh-straight defeat, 8-2, on a windy Tuesday afternoon in Cedar City. With the win, the Rebels improve to 23-9, while the Thunderbirds fall to 7-11.
Rebel starter Giovanni Pupo (2-0) earned the win. He gave up one unearned run on three hits with three strikeouts in five innings.
SUU starter Wes Matthews (0-1) pitched seven strong innings despite the loss, allowing three earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts.
UNLV broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the third inning on a pair of RBI-hits from Brent Johnson and Patrick Dobson. The Rebels tacked on another run in the fifth to lead 4-0 after a Fernando Valenzuela double scored Johnson.
The Rebels then put the game away with four runs in the eighth. Ryan Ruiz hit a two-run triple to right center to increase the lead to 8-2.
Johnson finished the game 2-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored. Ruiz went 1-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Valenzuela finished 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored.
Eric Nielsen extended his hitting streak to six games with a 1-for-4 effort. He also scored once.
UNLV hosts New Mexico for a three-game series beginning on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. Both the Rebels and Lobos hold a 7-2 mark in conference play this season.
