Rebels Take Series Over Bulldogs

FRESNO, Calif. ( – UNLV baseball (22-9/11-4 Mountain West), which is ranked No. 19 by Perfect Game and No. 25 by Baseball America, won its series against Fresno State (17-15/7-8 MW) with a 7-0 shutout victory on Sunday at Beiden Field.

Sophomore Bryan Bonnell threw his third complete game of the year in his first shutout performance. He allowed no runs on five hits and struck out four. In the ninth inning, he gave up his third walk of the season and his first walk in 28.2 innings. His last walk was in the fourth inning at San Jose State on March 16.

Dylan Ellis opened the scoring for the Rebels in the third inning after Joey Armstrong singled through the right side. Justin Jones followed that up with a single to left, scoring Matt McCallister from second. T.J. White singled to center, driving in Armstrong to give UNLV a 3-0 lead with one out in the frame.

Patrick Armstrong was then hit by a pitch to load the bases, still in the third, and Erik VanMeetren took a four-pitch walked to score Jones from third. Edgar Montes hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring White from third.

UNLV added another run in the fifth when Montes doubled down the left field line, scoring Pat Armstrong from first, giving the Rebels a 6-0 lead.

UNLV’s final run came in the ninth inning when White hit a sacrifice fly to right field, which scored Joey Armstrong.

Joey Armstrong (2-for-4), Jones (2-for-5) and White (2-for-4) all finished with multiple hits in the game. White and Montes led the team with two RBI a piece.

The Rebels will wrap up their nine game road stretch with two midweek games at Arkansas on Tuesday and Wednesday. UNLV will return home to host San Jose State on Friday, April 11. First pitch for the Friday contest between the Rebels and Spartans has been moved to 7:05 p.m. PT.
