Rebels Rout Spartans In Return To Wilson Stadium

LAS VEGAS ( - No. 17/20 UNLV baseball (24-10/12-4 Mountain West) beat San José State (10-24/5-11 MW) 9-1 in its return to Earl E. Wilson Stadium on Friday night.

The Rebels, who are ranked No. 17 by Perfect Game and No. 20 by Baseball America, move to 14-1 at Wilson Stadium this season.

UNLV starter Erick Fedde (7-1, 1.69 ERA) earned the win after he allowed one run on three hits in 7.0 innings of work. He also struck out eight and walked two on the night. Zach Story-Baker pitched 2.0 innings of relief and allowed one hit and struck out one.

The Rebels led off the game with back-to-back singles by Joey Swanner and Justin Jones. Swanner scored when T.J. White grounded into a double play to give UNLV a 1-0 lead.

The Spartans tied the game in the top of the second, but the Rebels added two more in the home half of the inning and would not relinquish the lead. UNLV took the lead after Edgar Montes tripled to left field, scoring Joey Armstrong from second. Montes scored on the next pitch when Matt McCallister laid down a sacrifice bunt to give UNLV a 3-1 lead.

In the third inning, the Rebels score four runs on four hits after the first two batters in the inning flied out and grounded out, respectively. Morgan Stotts hit a double to left field which drove in Patrick Armstrong and Erik VanMeetren. Montes followed that up with a single up the middle driving in Joey Armstrong and Stotts.

UNLV wrapped up its scoring in the fourth inning after Jones tripled to right-center field, scoring Swanner from first. Jones then scored the Rebels' final run after White recorded an RBI ground out.

Jones (2-for-4), Pat Armstrong (2-for-3), VanMeetren (2-for-3), Stotts (2-for-3) and Montes (2-for-3) led the Rebels from the plate, as they all finished the game with multiple hits. Montes also finished with a game-high three RBI.

UNLV and SJSU will square off in game two of the three-game series on Saturday at 1:05 p.m. PT. John Richy (5-2, 2.79 ERA) will get the nod for the Rebels and Johnathan Hernandez (0-4, 4.97 ERA) is projected to go for the Spartans.
