LAS VEGAS - The UNLV baseball team (24-14, 11-3 MWC) couldn't get the bats going in time as they fell 7-2 to the UC Riverside Highlanders (25-15, 4-2 Big West) on Tuesday night.

UC Riverside starter Jose Shaw (3-1) was virtually untouchable as he retired 17 Rebels in a row at one point, en route to his third victory of the season. The sophomore southpaw allowed just three hits in eight innings, wile picking up 12 strikeouts.

The Rebels were held to just five hits on the night, as Ryan Kowalski, Ty Soto, Chris Bonnell and Andrew D'Angelo each had base hit.

UNLV finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the ninth as Brent Johnson singled up the middle, scoring Kowalski and D'Angelo.

Rebel starter Matt Wagner (2-3) was charged with the loss, allowing five earned runs off of ten hits while walking one and striking out three.

The Rebels will resume Mountain West Conference play this weekend as they will host the University of New Mexico for a three-game series beginning Friday night at 6:30 p.m.
