Rebels Rally To Beat Aztecs 4-3

LAS VEGAS ( - UNLV baseball (26-12, 10-7 Mountain West) rallied to beat San Diego State (19-19, 10-7 MW) 4-3 at Earl E. Wilson Stadium on Saturday. UNLV is now 12-4 in one-run contests and moves into a tie for second in the Mountain West standings with SDSU.

The Aztecs led the majority of the game, after scoring one run in the top of the first inning. They extended their lead to 2-0 in the top of the seventh.

The Rebels cut the deficit in half, scoring one run in the bottom of the seventh and tied the game in the eighth inning when SDSU walked in a run. UNLV took a 4-2 lead when Erik VanMeetren hit a single to left field, scoring Justin Jones and Brandon Bayardi.

The Aztecs looked to make it a game, scoring one run in the ninth with two outs, but relief pitcher Tyler Iodence came into the game and retired the final out to secure the win for the Rebels.

Buddy Borden (5-1) earned the win after pitching 8.2 innings. He allowed three runs on six hits and struck out two while walking four. Iodence faced one batter and earned his third save of the season.

From the plate, UNLV was led by Patrick Armstrong who finished 2-for-3 with an RBI. T.J. White continued his recent hot streak, and also finished the game with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with one run scored.

The win gives the Rebels their first series victory over San Diego State since 2008, when UNLV took two of three from the Aztecs at Earl E. Wilson Stadium. The Rebels will look for the series sweep tomorrow and will send Kenny Oakley (3-2, 3.00 ERA) to face Philip Walby (1-2, 3.96 ERA).



First pitch is slated for 1:05 p.m. at Earl E. Wilson Stadium and it will be Breast Cancer Awareness Day at the ball park. Spectators are encouraged to wear pink for the cause.
