April 21, 2013
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV baseball (27-12, 11-7 Mountain West) completed the sweep over San Diego State (19-20, 10-8 MW) with a 5-2 win on Sunday at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
It is the first time since 2007 that UNLV has swept San Diego State and it is the first time since 2005 that the Rebels completed the feat in Las Vegas.
For the third straight day, SDSU opened the game with a run in the first inning to take the lead. UNLV rallied, scoring two in the fourth, but the Aztecs tied the game scoring one in the fifth.
Sophomore Erik VanMeetren drove in the go ahead runs when he doubled to left-center field, scoring Justin Jones and Brandon Bayardi in the eighth inning, giving the Rebels a 4-2 lead. VanMeetren would score an insurance run when the next batter, Patrick Armstrong, singled through the right side.
The three-run eighth inning helped secure UNLV's 14th comeback victory of the year.
Kenny Oakley (4-2) picked up the win after pitching his first career complete game. He allowed two runs, one of which was earned, on nine hits while striking out three.
UNLV will head back on the road next week, facing No. 9 Arizona State on Wednesday and then will travel to Albuquerque, N.M. to face Mountain West leader New Mexico for a three-game series starting on Friday.
