Rebels End Long Trip With Loss|
April 25, 2010
FORT WORTH, Texas - UNLV baseball could not avoid getting swept on Sunday, losing to No. 8 TCU by the score of 7-1 in the final of a three-game Mountain West Conference series at Lupton Stadium.
The Horned Frogs jumped out to an early lead and did not let the Rebels get going offensively, as they were held to just the lone run on six hits. UNLV is now 21-18 overall and 5-7 in the MWC while TCU is now 30-8 overall and 11-3 in league games.
UNLV starter Matt Hutchison was charged with the loss, as he gave up five runs, four earned, on eight hits in 6.2 innings on the mound. TCU starter Steven Maxwell earned the win, allowing just five hits and no runs in 7.2 innings, striking out nine and walking one Rebel batter.
The Horned Frogs were methodical on offense, scoring single runs in the second, third, fifth and sixth innings, to go along with a pair of runs in the eighth inning to cap the scoring. TCU had 12 hits on the afternoon, with Brance Rivera and Jerome Pena each getting three hits on the day.
The Rebels pushed their lone run of the game across the plate in the top of the eighth inning, when Drew Beuerlein was hit by a pitch and then came around to score on a double by Brandon Bayardi. The freshman finished with two hits, while no one else on the Rebels had more than one hit.
Today's game capped a nine-game road trip for the Rebels, which lasted three weeks, and they went 4-5 during the stretch that saw them play games at Utah, Tulane and No. 8 TCU.
