LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV baseball (27-15/15-8 Mountain West) used four home runs from three different players to clinch the series over New Mexico (31-13-1/14-6 MW) on Saturday.
Patrick Armstrong, twice, Morgan Stotts and Matt McCallister each homered, powering the Rebels to a 14-6 victory over the Lobos, which now makes UNLV 17-2 when playing at home.
The Rebels opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning when Pat Armstrong opened the inning with his first home run of the game to give UNLV a 1-0 lead.
The Lobos tied the game in the third inning by manufacturing a run after a Jack Zoellner hit a leadoff double, was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a ground out.
UNLV broke open the game by plating four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Joey Swanner and Edgar Montes scored when Joey Armstrong hit a bases loaded single through the right side. McCallister scored after Justin Jones singled down the right line and Joey Armstrong scored when T.J. White singled up the middle.
Stotts led off the fifth inning with the first home run of his career and Montes later scored on a Joey Armstrong single through the left side, giving the Rebels a 7-1 lead.
New Mexico bounced back, plating three runs in the sixth, but UNLV answered that with a McCallister two run homer off the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh.
The Lobos scored two more runs in the top of the eighth, and potentially could have had more, but UNLV got out of the inning via a 4-6-3 double play to end the UNM threat.
The Rebels followed that up by pushing across five runs in the home half of the inning. Two runs came when Pat Armstrong hit his second homer of the game, driving in Jones from second. Erik VanMeetren then reached on an error and scored after back-to-back singles by Swanner and Montes. Swanner and Montes then scored after McCallister doubles down the right field line.
John Richy (7-3) earned the win for the Rebels after tossing his fourth complete game of the year. He allowed six runs, five of which were earned, on eight hits and struck out nine while walking one in the game. He threw 95 pitches compared to 181 that New Mexico combined for as a team.
Swanner led UNLV from the plate, finishing 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Joey Armstrong (2-for-6), White (2-for-4), Pat Armstrong (2-for-3), Stotts (2-for-5), Montes (2-for-4) and McCallister (2-for-4) each finished with multiple hits in the game. Montes also scored a game-high four runs. The Armstrong brothers combined for six RBI in the game, as they each drove in a game-high three runs.
The Rebels and Lobos will wrap up their three-game series with the finale set for 1:05 p.m. PT on Sunday at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
