LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV baseball (30-16, 13-10 Mountain West) clinched its series over Fresno State (15-29, 9-14 MW) with a 9-2 victory on Saturday at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.
The Rebels scored three runs in the second inning and Patrick Armstrong hit a solo home run to give UNLV a 4-0 advantage after three innings.
The Bulldogs got on the board in the sixth inning, but UNLV responded scoring two in the bottom half of the frame.
Fresno State struck again in the top of the seventh and looked to rally, but Brady Zuniga came in for relief and struck out FSU's Aaron Judge to end the Bulldog threat.
The Rebels added to their lead by tacking on three more runs in the bottom of the seventh.
UNLV starter Buddy Borden (6-1) allowed only two runs on eight hits in 6.2 innings of work to earn the win. Zuniga picked up his fourth save of the season after allowing two hits and recording three strikeouts in 2.1 innings.
Joey Swanner led the Rebels, finishing 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two walks. Brandon Bayardi also finished with multiple hits, going 2-for-2, but left the game in the sixth inning. Justin Jones finished 1-for-3 but led the Rebels with four RBI.
The Bulldogs struggled from the mound, as only one of the eight pitchers used threw more than thirty pitches in the game. As a staff, they walked 11 Rebels and only struck out two.
UNLV will look for the series sweep tomorrow and is projected to send Brayden Torres (0-0, 2.50 ERA) to the mound for his first career start. Fresno State is slated to send Tim Borst (1-2, 3.80 ERA) to the bump for 1:05 p.m. game tomorrow.
