SAN DIEGO (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV baseball team dropped a second straight decision at San Diego State on Saturday night by a score of 9-2 at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The Aztecs posted three big innings, getting two runs in the second, four in the third and three in the fifth en route to their 22nd victory of the year.
Rebel starter Zak Qualls (4-4) took the loss after lasting just two-and-two-thirds innings. The freshman left-hander struggled with control, allowing six runs on six hits while walking five and striking out three. The win went to SDSU starter Michael Cederoth (3-3) after allowing two runs on five hits in six innings of work.
The Rebels got the scoring started on this night, plating a run in the top of the first. Freshman Joey Swanner led off the game with a double down the leftfield line and would later score on Brandon Bayardi's one-out single to right. The Aztecs would answer quickly, however, scoring two runs in the second. Ryan Muno led of the inning by flying to right but back-to-back walks to John Spirk and Dillon Bryant had Qualls in a jam. Jake Romanski followed with a single to load the bases and Steven Pallares' walk forced home SDSU's first run of the night. With the bases still loaded, Greg Allen lofted a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Bryant from third and giving the Aztecs a lead they would not relinquish.
San Diego State (22-26,11-9 Mountain West) got four more in the third off five hits and a walk, making the game 6-1 after three. In the fifth, they would bring home three more runs before UNLV (21-27,5-15 MW) finally broke through again with a single run in the sixth.
UNLV and San Diego State will conclude its season series tomorrow at 1:05 p.m. Sophomore right-hander Buddy Borden will work for the Rebels while right-hander Ryan Doran will go for SDSU. The game can be heard live on UNLVRebels.com.
