May 11, 2013
RENO, Nev. (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV baseball (33-17, 15-11 Mountain West) clinched the weekend series with a 5-1 victory over rival Nevada, Reno (24-26, 11-15 MW). The win gives UNLV three wins in the season series and makes tomorrow's game pivotal in terms of points for the Governor's Series presented by NV Energy.
Nevada, Reno starting pitcher Tyler Wells opened the game by completing the rare feat of striking out four batters in an inning. Despite the impressive start, UNLV took advantage of two UNR errors and a wild pitch to score two runs in the inning.
Wells then buckled down, only allowing three UNLV hits the remainder of the game.
The Rebels extended their lead by plating three runs on two hits and three UNR errors in the fifth inning to take a 5-0 lead.
The Wolf Pack scored their lone run in the bottom of the fifth, which was the only run that UNLV starter Buddy Borden (7-1) would allow in the game.
Borden allowed eight hits, in the winning effort, while striking out four and walking four in 7.0 innings of work. His ERA improved to 2.16 on the year which is not only the lowest on the Rebel staff, but also the lowest in the Mountain West.
Brady Zuniga pitched well in relief, allowing no runs or hits while striking and walking three in 2.0 innings.
Wells allowed five runs, however only was earned, on three hits while striking nine, which matched his career high.
