Las Vegas, Nev. ( - UNLV baseball (31-21/18-10 MW) got a strong pitching performance from junior starter John Richy in an 8-1 victory over Nevada, Reno (28-23/15-13 MW) on Thursday nightn at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.

Richy (10-3) notched his 10th quality start of the season with seven strikeouts. He scattered seven hits over 7.0 innings to earn his conference-best 10th win of the season. Joey Lauria made his team-high 17th appearance out of the bullpen and pitched 2.0 innings of relief where he struck out three and allowed one hit.

With the win, UNLV clinches the No. 2 seed in the Mountain West tournament while improving to 19-3 at home.

The Rebels opened the scoring in the first inning when Joey Armstrong blasted his fourth home run of the season over the left field wall to go up 1-0.

UNR leveled the game when Brad Gerig scored on a Kyle Hunt single up the middle.

UNLV jumped ahead in the fourth inning. With two outs, Eric VanMeetren singled to left center, and moved to second on a Joey Swanner single to right center. Then with A.J. Hernandez batting, VanMeetren scored on a wild pitch and Swanner advanced to third. Hernandez brought home Swanner with a single to right center to put UNLV up 3-1.

The Rebels added three more runs in the home half of the sixth and two more in the eighth.

Hernandez went 3-for-4 with four RBI and one run scored, while VanMeetren went 1-for-2 with three runs scored to lead UNLV from the plate.

The Rebels and Wolf Pack will play the second game of their three-game set Friday at 6:05 p.m. PT. Bryan Bonnell (5-5, 2.63 ERA) is slated to be on the hill for UNLV, while Barry Timko (6-2, 3.62 ERA) is expected to pitch for UNR.
