COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. ( - UNLV baseball (35-18, 17-12 Mountain West) evened the weekend series against Air Force (15-36, 7-22 MW) with a 7-6 victory on Thursday at Falcon Field.

With the win, the Rebels clinch the No. 2 seed, and a first round bye, at the Mountain West Tournament in Fresno, Calif. next week. Coming into the season, UNLV was slated to finish fifth in the preseason coaches’ poll.

“I’m super proud that our kids were able to grind all season long,” head coach Tim Chambers said. “They played the game the right way and it’s good to see them work hard and get the respect we didn’t have coming into the season.”

Air Force grabbed the lead in the second inning, scoring one run but UNLV responded by plating three runs in the top of the third to take a 3-1 lead.

Each team plated one run in the fourth inning, and the Rebels built on their lead in the fifth thanks to a two-run home run by Patrick Armstrong that scored Brandon Bayardi. It was Armstrong's seventh home run of the season.

UNLV would plate one more run in the eighth before Air Force would rally in the bottom of the ninth inning. The Falcons scored three runs and came within one run before freshman Brayden Torres entered the game to record the final out and earn his first career save.

The Rebels’ starter Buddy Borden (8-1) finished Mountain West play with a perfect 6-0 record after allowing three runs, two of which were earned, on seven hits while striking out five and walking two against the Falcons.
