SACRAMENTO, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV baseball team completed a series sweep over Sacramento State with a 8-7 win in 11 innings in a non-conference game Sunday afternoon at John Smith Field.

With the game tied at 6-6 and two outs in the top of the 11th, Brandon Pletsch hit a bases-loaded two-run single that scored Danny Higa and Trevor Kirk, which proved to be the game-winning run.

UNLV (26-29) scored two runs in the first and another in the second and led 3-2 after four innings, before Sacramento State scored two in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead. The Rebels answered with two runs in the sixth and another in the seventh, while the Hornets scored two in the seventh and one in the 11th.

Jesse Garcia started on the hill for the Rebels, pitching five innings and giving up five hits and four runs. He struck out five batters before Mark Shannon came on in relief for two-and-two-thirds innings giving up three hits and two runs. Buddy Borden (2-5) picked up the win for UNLV after pitching two-and-a-third innings. Joe Robinson was credited with a save after throwing the final frame.

Sacramento State (29-26) used five pitchers and the last one to see action, R.J. Davis (1-1) took the loss as he gave up two runs on the game-winning hit in one inning pitched.

The Rebels recorded 14 hits to Sacramento State's 11. Shannon, Trent Cook, Brandon Bayardi, Erik VanMeetren and Higa all had two hits for UNLV. VanMeetren hit the Rebels' lone double of the game.

 

 

The Rebels have completed the regular season and will turn their attention to this week's Mountain West Baseball Championship Tournament, which begins Thursday at UNLV's Wilson Stadium. UNLV will face top-seeded New Mexico at 7 p.m. All tournament games will be televised on The Mtn.
