LAS VEGAS - UNLV (34-22) jumped out to an early 8-0 lead and never looked back, earning a 13-9 victory over Air Force (5-48) on Wednesday afternoon. With the win, the Rebels move on to the winner's bracket where they will face New Mexico tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. The Falcons will play an elimination game later this evening against the Cougars of BYU.

The Rebels scoring spree started in the bottom of the first, as senior center fielder Brent Johnson singled through the left side, scoring senior left fielder Andrew D'Angelo. In the inning, the Rebels benefited from RBI singles by senior first baseman Eddie Gill, junior catcher Brad Ross and senior shortstop Peter White.

The Falcons rallied in the seventh as they inched their way back into the game, coming away with four runs on five straight base hits to close the gap to 12-9. Sophomore right fielder Jason Brown picked up a RBI with a single to right field before freshman third baseman Karl Bolt doubled down the left field line, scoring two. Junior first baseman Travis Fugler's single to left scored Bolt to add another run.

Senior shortstop Peter White paced the Rebels, going 2-for-4 with four RBI. Sophomore designated hitter Ryan Bird added three hits, while Johnson, and senior second baseman Ryan Ruiz each had multiple hit games.

Falcon starter Paul Vignola (1-11) was charged with the loss, giving up eight runs on six hits while walking one in just two-thirds of an inning. Bolt led the Falcons with three RBI on a 3-for-5 performance at the plate while junior left fielder Reid Lamson was 3-for-4 with one run batted in.

 

 

For UNLV, sophomore right-handed Matt Wagner (3-4) earned the win, allowing six runs on ten hits while walking two and striking out five during his six innings on the mound.
