LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Coming on the heels of being named to the 2014 Golden Spikes Award watch list, junior Erick Fedde (1-0) and UNLV baseball (1-0) lived up to the hype in the 2014 season opener Friday night.

In front of at least 50 pro scouts, Fedde pitched 7.1 innings and struck out a career-best 11 in the Rebels' 5-0 victory over Central Michigan (0-1). It was the first time UNLV has shut-out an opponent at Earl E. Wilson Stadium since an 8-0 victory over New Mexico on April 29, 2011.

Fedde gave up just one hit and no walks in the game and recorded 17 straight outs before being pulled in the eighth inning. Brayden Torres (1) came on in relief and pitched 1.2 innings, striking out two, to earn his first save of the year.

It was a pitching duel most of the night as CMU starter Jordan Foley (0-1) held the Rebels to just two hits in the first four innings. The Rebels took advantage of a Chippewa error in the second to take a 1-0 lead.

UNLV opened up the scoring in the fifth inning as T.J. White doubled to left field, scoring Joey Armstrong and Joey Swanner, giving The Rebels a 5-0 lead.

UNLV added two more runs in the eighth inning when Matt McCallister hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Erik VanMeetren, and when Parker Hokuf reached after getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Morgan Stotts.

From the plate the Rebels were led by White, who finished 2-for-5 with two RBI. Joey Armstrong also finished with two hits, going 2-for-4 and scoring a run. Armstrong has now recorded a hit in six straight games, dating back to last season.

UNLV limited the Chippewa to only three hits in the game and recorded a total 13 strikeouts and no walks.

The two teams will play a double header on Saturday, with the first pitch of the first game scheduled to go off at 1:05 p.m. The second game will be played 45 minutes after the first game ends.
