REBEL TOURNAMENT TALK: This weekend's Marucci Desert Classic marks the second straight year that the UNLV baseball program will open up a season at home with a three-day, six-team tournament. In 2017, the Rebels welcomed the Omaha Mavericks, Saint Mary's Gaels and UC Davis Aggies to town; however, rain played a factor in the weekend's festivities.

Dating back to the 1980 campaign, the Rebels will have played host to 20 tournaments with 17 of those spanning a 23-year period (1980-2002). Eighteen of those tourneys were of the midseason variety while 2017's UNLV Classic and this weekend's Marucci Desert Classic kick off the campaigns.

ON DECK: The UNLV baseball team will stay at home following the Marucci Desert Classic to host the Columbia Lions in a four-game series that will run February 23-25 at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.

A LITTLE ABOUT UNLV: The UNLV baseball team was picked to finish fifth in the Mountain West's Preseason Coaches Poll. The Rebels went 20-36 one year ago and finished seventh in the MW with a 10-20. The MW's seven head coaches voted Kyle Isbel and Bryson Stott to the Preseason All-Conference Team.

The Rebels return 21 letterwinners from last year's squad, including four starting position players (Isbel/CF, Stott/SS, Nick Rodriguez/IF and Nick Ames/1B) and all three weekend starting pitchers (Alan Strong, Larry Quaney and Garrett Poole). The team will welcome 13 newcomers and one redshirt sophomore into the fold this season.

SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION: Indiana State went 29-26 last year and finished Missouri Valley Conference play in fifth place with a 12-9 mark. The Sycamores were picked to finish fourth in the MVC, while redshirt Dane Gisler, who played both corner infield positions, was chosen to the Preseason All-MVC Team.

-UNLV vs. ISU: The series is tied 1-1 with both games taking place in 2001: March 4 (ISU, 3-2 win) and March 5 (UNLV, 7-1 win).

Loyola Marymount went 38-18 last year and finished in a first-place tie in the West Coast Conference with a 20-7 mark. The Lions were picked to finish fifth in the WCC, while senior outfielder Jamey Smart was chosen to the All-WCC Preseason Team.

-UNLV vs. LMU: The Rebels lead the series 30-19; however, the team's have alternated wins and losses in the last six meetings. LMU won the last contest, 8-7, played on April 14, 2015, in Los Angeles.
